Collection Poster
Collection Poster

Course: Art 221 Introduction to Design

Rationale: My exhibition collection consists of healing stones and crystals that I photographed with a DSLR camera. Images were taken from various angles and in different lighting situations. These images were edited and masked in Adobe Photoshop, the text on the poster and brochure was manipulated in Adobe Illustrator and both were placed on the same grid in Adobe InDesign. Additional paint strokes and geometric shapes consisting of numerous blending modes were added into the composition as delicate details to direct the eye of the viewer fully around the poster and brochure. This is the poster created for the collection display.

Symbol Sets
Symbol Sets

Course: Art 221 Introduction to Design

Rationale: The symbol set focuses on the three most important aspects of succulent care in order to see growth. The succulent is watered, placed in the sunlight, and lives in a well balanced environment. By participating in each step of care with positive energy and love, the succulent will grow healthily.

Threadless T-Shirt Design
Threadless T-Shirt Design

Course: Art 221 Introduction to Design

Rationale: My design concept revolves around the ideas of celebrating one’s unique life story through self-love. The main focal point is a baby deer, which is an animal that represents sensitivity, intuition, and gentleness. The baby deer gracefully surrounds it’s unique record; a disc in which sounds or images have been recorded. This is a translation of one owning their life story. Both are covered by an intertwining olive branch, used as a sign of victory over the struggles of the past and as a sign of peace during moments of growth.

A brand book (also referred to as: brand guide, visual identity guidelines, brand manual, style guide, brand identity book or brand toolkit) is an official corporate document that explains the brand’s identity and presents brand standards. Some brand books are focused exclusively on the design aspect, while others include a company overview and communication guidelines as well.

With Love From Brown Eyes to Blue Eyes

This body of work focuses on interpersonal relationships and connections we make with our loved ones. I'm currently investigating the relationship between my grandmother and grandfather.  Objects such as their home, love letters, fur coats, clocks, and collectable cars, were left behind by my grandfather and grandmother, but primarily my grandfather.  These remnants of the past stand as metaphors and symbols of their affection and commitment. I am particularly interested in this because upon my grandfather’s death, I found a quote on his obituary saying, “Continue my heritage, I am counting on you.” These letters slowly uncover the layers of my grandparents past and the love that began our family. I am taking that to heart and moving forward by maintaining his values on intimacy, hoping one day to pass down his legacy to children of my own.

Higher Self

This body of work represents my metaphysical relationship with the universe and examines the idea of reaching my highest self.

There is a constant duality of self and environment within these photographs showing an intuitive comprehension that my higher self exists. This growing understanding is portrayed through the use of natural elements, deer, trees, the light itself and the way it reflects shadows.

This higher being that holds all the answers to life has been with me from a young age on. I am interested in showing the growth of my spiritually and my ability to sense and experience energetic vibrations.

This transition from my understanding of the physical world to the nature of the energetic world begins by changing my deepest attitudes and expectations towards life; not only relying on what I see but trusting energetic sensations within the body. To find a higher level of consciousness, I must step away from what I think I know, allowing myself to trust my inner wisdom.

Ego Herself

Ego Herself depicts a disorder that has impacted my life greatly.  I wanted to create a narrative that deeply explored what certain experiences felt and looked like for someone who lives from a place of fear, enhanced by the ego. The ego presents itself in it’s most heightened form, altering one’s self-esteem because of it’s nature to rely on the external environment for reassurance. There are many different ways people interpret what an ego is, but for this project, the focus surrounds how the ego inflicts fear of failure and judgment and how it ultimately can lead to fear of self.

The farther away I drifted from reality, the stronger my eating disorder became. My ego had control over my thoughts, feelings, and actions, seeking comfort in self-depreciation.

By removing the mirror of judgment, each human being is seen uniquely as an individual. Through grace, we discover that imperfection is a strength rather than a weakness; That it is a gift that fuels growth.

And so it is.

Root Chakra Exploration

Chakras are energy points within the body which connect to aspects of one’s physical and emotional life. The root chakra is placed at the bottom of the spine and is the first chakra out of seven within the body. This vibrant red energy center is often known as the ‘base’ or ‘roots’ in which ground us to the earth. If this foundational chakra isn't cleansed or balanced, one will struggle to have a clear understanding of life and self.

When the root chakra is unbalanced, one will feel disconnected with their own self, experiencing and an internal lack of protection, trust, stability, independence, self-confidence, direction, and an adaptability to change. Physical symptoms of an unbalanced root chakra include; pain in the back, legs, and feet and digestive discomfort.

I am focusing on the spirituality of energetic healing and how I physically visualize these vibrations that are not tangible. To better understand the energetic alignment of the root chakra, I explored the body, natural elements, healing stones, and objects containing the color red to portray what an intuitive experience looks and feels like visually.

Rationale: I used the, “36 hour” travel series newspaper article to formulate a list of adjectives that described Tulum, Mexico. The two adjectives that served as a design compass were, soothing and natural. To gain a better understanding of the city’s culture, visual aesthetic, and spirit, I gathered stock images to incorporate into the layout. After experimenting with various typefaces, Kelper Std. was chosen to portray the simplistic nature of the city. The images and hierarchically designed text were placed into a four column grid made in InDesign.

Rationale: The letterforms I chose to represent Rome portray the important attributes of the city’s well known architecture. The letter ‘C’ mirrors a solid structural foundation, holding in place the curving details of decorative elegance. Experimentally sketching letterforms using a variety of unique typefaces, font styles, and abstract letter manipulation led me to determine what compositional design elements worked best visually. Through several trials of letter combining with the intent to create balance with letter weight, scale, and shape using negative and positive space, solutions were reached.

Rationale: After researching Rome and it’s history, I chose to represent their beautiful architectural structures to portray the spirit of the city. Throughout the ideation and sketching process, typogrpahic solutions were made by choosing a typeface that mirrored the ornamentation and structural stability of a Roman arch. The graphic elements were then customized into the letterforms themselves and were colored to mirror stone and or cement.

Rationale: After researching Adobe Garamond Premiere Pro, I creatively wrote a story incorporating factual information about the typeface and it’s development. The poster layout was constructed using a modular grid made in InDesign, focusing on hierarchy and organization. Experimentation with the title, subheading, and body copy typesettings helped to increase legibility. To further visual appeal and communication, I mirrored design elements from illuminated manuscripts which are bright in color to enhance mood.
